I changed my Ubuntu desktop from unity to LXDE. Unity and LXDE are both Ubuntu desktop alternatives. LXDE is a cut-down desktop environment using lower specs and so can run faster on older computers or when using Ubuntu within a virtual machine. Speeding up Ubuntu with Lubuntu becomes possible with only a few commands.
Lubuntu is a fully blown linux distro using LXDE. LXDE is just the packages required for running the desktop environment.
Use the following command to use Lubuntu’s customized LXDE desktop:
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
After this has installed, log out and select Lubuntu from the desktop selection panel. See image:
Your new desktop should look like this and run faster that unity:
And thats it: Speeding up Ubuntu with Lubuntu
